Abbey Sharp, DVM

Dr. Sharp is a 2019 graduate from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating veterinary school, Dr. Sharp completed a rigorous internship with Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center in Pittsburgh, PA and just completed a veterinary dentistry residency at the Center for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery in Gaithersburg, MD in July! Dr. Sharp has a strong interest in oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontal therapy, feline dentistry, and client education.

Originally hailing from a small town in central Pennsylvania, Dr. Sharp joined the team at Pacific Coast Veterinary Dentistry in July 2023. Making the move to Carlsbad with Dr. Sharp are Castiel, a Miniature Australian shepherd, and two tabby cats, Happy and Bucky! On the weekends, they can be found exploring the areas around Carlsbad, hanging out at Del Mar Dog Beach, playing video games, or crafting.

Why is board certification for veterinary dental specialists important?
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Board of Veterinary Specialties recognizes only medical and surgical specialists that have completed board certification through their specialty organization. In North America, there is only one AVMA recognized specialty college for veterinary dentistry in horses and pets: the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC).

A Board Certified Veterinary Dentist^TM and Board Certified Equine Veterinary Dentist^TM are titles reserved only for veterinarians who have successfully completed residency training through the AVDC and passed the AVDC’s certifying examinations.

These dental specialists, called diplomates, are uniquely qualified to perform advanced dentistry and oral surgery for patients, teach in veterinary schools, and provide continuing education in dentistry to veterinarians in general practice.
